Without a Vision… People Misinterpret Proverbs 29:18; Radio Spot. Take a Listen

In this edited sermon, I address the common misinterpretation of the line in Isaiah 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish.

First people fail to quote the whole proverb. It goes, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” The second half is sort of important… it explains the first part. This is not about organization goals… it’s about prophetic revelation at work in society through Torah.

The Christian tends to denigrate the law, because it isn’t the final instrument in salvation. We think, “If the Law can’t save, what good is it?”

This is wrong headed. The Law plays its part in the salvation of the soul. We need to learn to love the Law for what it is, not despise it for what it’s not. If my extension ladder has a label that says, “This is not a flotation device,” should I get rid of it? NO! I should use it for its meant to be used. So goes the Torah.

The Law is our private tutor… our nanny… our governess… responsible for restraining our wickedness and exposing our sin and need until our hearts are ready for the gospel.
